Mantis

At Snake Island Exotics we offer a range of Mantis for you to enjoy as pets! From Orchid Mantis to Asian Dead Leaf Mantis, there’s something for everybody.

You need an enclosure filled with appropriate substrate and some surfaces or branches for climbing and hanging. Make sure the enclosure of your pet is suitable. This means that the enclosure is at least 3x longer than the body length of the mantis and 2x wider. This will ensure that the mantis has plenty of space to walk around in and to use when it will shed its skin (molt). The cage should also have proper ventilation.

Mantises only eat live insects for food. This can be flies, crickets, moths, caterpillars, locusts and some other insects.

Giant African Land Snail

The Giant African Land Snails (Achatina sp.) are molluscs and make ideal pets as they are easy to look after. They can live for several years and grow up to 20cm in length. The snails are most active during the night (they are nocturnal).

These snails can be housed in a variety of containers, depending upon the size and number of snails that you have. A good container is a glass or plastic aquarium tank. These type of containers allow easy cleaning and you will be able to watch your snails through the sides.

The African Land Snails are very easy to feed, as they will eat a wide variety of things. The best food is lettuce and cucumber but apple, banana and cabbage can also be given. However, if you give your snails food that goes off quickly (like banana and apple) be sure to remove it when it has gone brown so as not to make your snails ill.

Stick Insect

Some species are very easy to keep, while others pose more of a challenge to the real insect enthusiast. For everyone there is a nice species to keep, but all species require care.

The enclosure of your stick insect should be at least 3 times the body length of the insect in height and 2 times the body length in width. If you keep more than one stick insect, you have to add some space for each one of them, preferably in width of the tank. Stick insects really need 3 times their body length in hight to survive, because they need this space while molting.

Stick insects eat leaves, but they do not eat all types of plants. Every species has one or more plants which they eat, while they will refuse to eat other leaves.

Giant Millipedes

Millipedes are pretty incredible arthropods. These insects are known for having hundreds of legs and peacefully munching on decaying wood and leaf litter on the forest floor.

You’ll want the enclosure to be at least as wide as the animal’s length, and at least twice as long for optimal wiggle room. Keep in mind this is minimum housing size. Your pede will feed primarily on its substrate, so the more space for substrate the merrier. Plastic Critter Keepers or small tanks work well – even plastic storage containers can be easily modified with some air holes for use.

The single most important thing about housing millipedes is their substrate. Substrate acts as a place for the millipede to dig, eat, hide, drink, and live in. For a millipede, substrate = life.
